Looking for ski or snowboard lessons at GALA Yuzawa? For the best day on snow, we recommend booking with Canyons at Ishiuchi Maruyama, just 3 minutes from GALA Yuzawa. We provide a free return shuttle between the two, so you can keep your day-trip plans and spend more time on the snow.
Far fewer crowds: GALA Yuzawa has become very busy at peak times, with crowded slopes and long queues at the rental shop. Ishiuchi Maruyama is a much quieter mountain, with more space to learn and ski.
Free return shuttle: All Ishiuchi Maruyama lesson guests can use our free return shuttle, which picks up in front of the GALA Yuzawa ski main building (about 3 minutes each way). Request it when you book.
A great mountain to learn on: 23 varied runs, wide beginner slopes, Yuzawa's best terrain park, night skiing and 18 slope-side restaurants.
Skip the rental queue: have premium gear delivered to your hotel with PURE JOY Rentals.
Canyons private lessons: in English, Chinese or Thai, from ¥45,000 per instructor for up to 6 people.

GALA Yuzawa Snow Resort is Japan’s only ski resort with a dedicated Shinkansen (Bullet Train) station, making it one of the most convenient destinations for a ski day trip from Tokyo. You can leave the city in the morning and be skiing on the slopes before 9 AM!
The resort features a wide variety of beginner and intermediate terrain, along with more advanced runs for experienced riders, making it ideal for skiers and snowboarders of all levels.
For lessons, we recommend Ishiuchi Maruyama, 3 minutes away by our free shuttle (see above). Canyons also continues to accept private lesson bookings at GALA Yuzawa for returning guests – see below.
16 ski courses across three connected zones — Central, Northern, and Southern
Terrain split: roughly 35% beginner, 45% intermediate, 20% advanced
Longest run: around 2.5km
Steepest groomed run: up to 33°
Average snowfall: around 11 metres per winter
Late January through early March typically brings the best snow — cold temperatures, a deep base, and every lift running. December can have thinner cover on the lower slopes, while late March into April brings softer, more spring-like conditions.
Candid advice from our team, who've run lessons here for 15 seasons:
Choose Gala if: you want the easiest possible day trip from Tokyo, well-groomed family-friendly terrain, and English-friendly signage throughout.
Think twice if: you're visiting on a weekend, public holiday or Chinese New Year (it gets genuinely crowded, on the slopes and at the rental shop), or you're chasing off-piste and tree runs — those are strictly patrolled and off-limits here. For fewer crowds we recommend Ishiuchi Maruyama (3 minutes away by our free shuttle); for more challenging terrain, try Kagura.
Non-skiers aren't left out — the Snow Enjoyment Park has sledding and tubing, and the Bell of Love Observation Deck gives panoramic views over the Yuzawa valley. After skiing, there's an onsen bath right in the base building, so you can soak before heading back to Tokyo.
To help you make the most of your snow holiday with Canyons, we’ve put together a Yuzawa Resort Guide. Whether you're planning your first visit or returning for more powder, this guide will help you choose the best resort for your needs.

We recommend PURE JOY rentals – premium ski and snowboard rentals delivered direct to your hotel, so you can skip the queues at the resort rental shop.
