At Canyons, we’ve spent years exploring every corner of these mountains. Here’s our local guide to discovering your perfect spot and why having an international instructor by your side makes all the difference.

Nestled in the heart of Nagano Prefecture, Japan, Shiga Kogen stands as one of the country’s most celebrated winter destinations. This expansive area is renowned for its dramatic mountains, unique terrain, and the reliable powder snow that draws skiers and snowboarders from around the world. Thanks to its high altitude and the strong winds that sweep across the region, Shiga Kogen consistently delivers deep, fluffy snow throughout the winter. At the center of it all is Shiga Kogen Yakebitaiyama, the area’s flagship resort, offering a diverse range of ski trails that cater to everyone from first-timers to advanced powder hounds. Whether you’re looking to carve fresh lines or simply soak in the breathtaking alpine scenery, Shiga Kogen is the perfect place to experience the magic of a Japanese winter.
Timing your trip to Shiga Kogen can make all the difference in your experience. The snow begins to fall as early as November, blanketing the eastern side of the mountains in a pristine layer of powder by December. This marks the start of the winter season, when temperatures drop below freezing and the slopes come alive with skiers and snowboarders eager to enjoy some of the best snow in Japan. The eastern areas, in particular, are known for their heavy snowfall and light, fluffy powder ideal for those looking to make the most of their time on the mountain. With Shiga Kogen located just a few hours from Tokyo, it’s a convenient escape for visitors seeking a true winter wonderland. For the best conditions, plan your visit between December and early May, when the snow is at its deepest and the atmosphere is buzzing with excitement.
Because your lift pass covers the whole mountain resort, you have plenty of options. Shiga Kogen boasts one of Japan's longest ski seasons, running from late November to early May, with peak snow conditions typically in January and February. Here are a few of our favorite spots to take our students:
Ichinose Family:This is the heart of the action in Yamanouchi. It’s centrally located, has a great mix of groomed runs, and is super easy to navigate. The area features many open trails suitable for all levels. If you’re traveling with a group of mixed ability levels, this is usually our top recommendation for a meeting spot.
Yakebitaiyama: If you want that “Big Mountain” feel, head here. It hosted events during the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics. It’s home to Olympic-level runs and high-speed gondolas. The solid snow conditions and well-maintained trails are ideal for practicing sharp turns and maintaining proper weight distribution. It’s perfect for intermediate riders who want to clock some serious distance on perfectly maintained terrain.
Okushiga Kogen: Tucked away at the northern edge, this is the spot for powder hunters. Its north-facing slopes keep the snow dry and light. Choosing the right board and boots is essential here, especially for powder conditions. Snowboarders and skiers can enjoy both solid and soft snow surfaces. It’s peaceful, scenic, and offers incredible off-piste terrain.
Terakoya: One of the highest elevations in the park! The views are breathtaking, and because of the altitude, the snow quality is almost always top-tier.

Beyond world-class skiing and snowboarding, Shiga Kogen offers a vibrant array of activities and events to keep every visitor entertained. The region is alive with options: try snowshoeing through quiet forests, glide across an outdoor ice skating rink, or join in the fun at one of the many seasonal festivals and ski competitions held throughout the winter. The area’s rich Japanese culture is never far away take a day trip to the nearby city of Nagano to explore the historic Zenko-ji Temple, or sample local food favorites like handmade soba noodles and warming Japanese sake. Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or a taste of authentic Japanese life, Shiga Kogen’s diverse activities and cultural experiences ensure your stay is as memorable off the slopes as it is on them.
