If you’re heading to Myoko Kogen this winter, you already know the deal: it’s the land of bottomless powder, legendary onsens, and some of the steepest tree runs in Japan. Akakura Onsen is where most people stay when visiting Myoko Kogen, as it is the main village and central hub for accommodations and access to the ski resorts. It is also one of the main Myoko ski areas, alongside other popular resorts in the region. But how do you make sure your trip actually lives up to the hype without draining your bank account?
Enter Canyons Myoko. We aren’t just another ski school; we’re officially the fastest-growing, 5-star rated team in the area, 3 years running. Whether you’re here to finally master the “Japow” or just want a pro to show you the best stashes in Akakura Onsen, we’ve got you.
There’s a reason we’ve been the top-rated choice for three seasons straight. Our experienced instructors are available to help students reach their skiing and snowboarding goals at Akakura, and don’t do boring, stiff lessons. Every lesson is tailored to your individual ability, ensuring that both beginners and advanced skiers and snowboarders get the right level of challenge. We focus on personalised coaching that actually gets you results, all while keeping the vibes high. Our lessons are designed to help skiers and snowboarders build confidence on the mountain. Not only are our lessons effective, but they are also exciting, making the learning process fun and engaging for all ages and skill levels. Our commitment to personalised instruction is designed to help you improve your skiing and snowboarding skills at any level. Check the reviews our guests come for the skills but stay for the mountain experience.
Skiing with the crew? Our private ski and snowboard lessons are designed for groups of up to a maximum of 6 people and can be shared with friends, making the experience more social and enjoyable.
The Maths: Split the cost with 5 mates and you get an elite, English-speaking instructor for a fraction of the price.
The Result: More money left over for ramen, highballs, and 7-Eleven runs (if you know, you know).
Private lessons and programs are designed to suit different group sizes, skill levels, and preferences.

Myoko is famous for its heavy snowfall, but riding deep powder is a specific skill.
We provide private lessons for skiers or snowboarders of all skill levels, with instruction tailored to your specific level.
Beginners: We offer beginner lessons designed for those experiencing skiing or snowboarding for the first time, ensuring you gain confidence and foundational skills quickly. Both ski and snowboard lessons are available for all skill levels.
Intermediates: Let’s get you into those trees safely.
Pro-Level: Ask about our private backcountry tours. We’ll take you away from the crowds to find the untouched lines you see on your Insta feed.
Before joining a lesson, you can assess your level to ensure you join the right group and get the most out of your instruction.
While Hakuba is often the first name people think of, savvy travellers are heading to Myoko for a better experience at a better price point.
More Powder, Less Spend: Hakuba is legendary, but it’s also becoming increasingly corporate and expensive. In Myoko, you get world-class snow volume (often exceeding Hakuba’s totals) without the “big resort” price tag on food and accommodation.
Stretch Your Yen: Lift passes and local eats in Niigata Prefecture generally offer much better value for money than the high-traffic hubs in the Hakuba Valley.
Skip the Crowds: More people in Hakuba means the powder gets tracked out by 10:00 AM. In Myoko, you get more “vertical for your yen” because you spend less time in lift lines and more time on untouched snow.
Note: Booking early is highly recommended to secure the best rates and avoid disappointment during peak season.
While other resorts are getting crowded, Myoko keeps it real. From the massive vertical at Suginohara to the local soul of Ikenotaira, there’s a reason the world’s best riders are flocking here.
At Canyons, we’re locals. We know which lift has the shortest line and where has the best katsu curry. Canyons offers lessons and activities suitable for the whole family, with programs designed for all ages, including children and adults. Our inclusive environment welcomes skiers of all skill levels, ensuring everyone from beginners to experienced skiers can enjoy their time on the mountain. Comprehensive guest services are available to assist with lesson bookings, provide resort information, and offer in-resort support throughout your stay. When you book with us, you aren’t just getting a teacher; you’re getting a mountain guide who knows the “ins and outs” of the area.

Getting to the heart of Japan’s snow country is way easier than you think. Akakura Onsen ski resort sits right in the middle of the Myoko Kogen ski resorts, making it a prime launchpad for your winter adventure. Whether you’re flying in from overseas or hopping over from Tokyo, you’ll find the journey to be smooth, scenic, and surprisingly quick.

Ready to shred the legendary slopes of the Myoko Kogen ski resorts? Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned powder hound, getting your gear sorted is the secret sauce for a killer day on the mountain.
At Canyons Myoko, we make it incredibly easy. We are based out of Hotel Taiko, which is also home to Go Myoko Rentals. This means you can sort your high-end kit and meet your instructors all in one convenient spot.

If you’re booking ski or snowboard lessons, having the right setup for your skill level is a game-changer. Through our partners at Go Myoko, you’ll find a massive range of the latest skis, boards, and boots, so you can travel light and still ride like a pro.
Safety is our top priority. Helmets are a must for all private lessons, whether you’re an adult or signing up the kids.
Because the snowfall in Myoko is legendary (we’re talking 13+ metres a season!), the winter chill is real. We recommend the "3-Layer Rule":
Base Layer: Moisture-wicking (avoid cotton!).
Mid-Layer: A cosy fleece or wool sweater.
Outer Shell: A quality waterproof jacket and pants to keep the "Japow" on the outside.
Lift Passes: Snag your lift pass online before you arrive. It saves time and helps you skip the morning queues at spots like Suginohara or Ikenotaira.
Base Camp: Remember, our hub at Hotel Taiko is your one-stop shop for Go Myoko Rentals and Canyons lessons.
Travel: Most of our guests fly into Haneda Airport and take the Shinkansen, a direct mountain shuttle, or local and airport buses. Bus options include regular local buses and shuttles from airports and train stations to Akakura Onsen, making access easy. Once you’re in Myoko, everything is a breeze.
Why is Canyons the fastest-growing school? Because we actually listen to what you want. No “one size fits all” teaching. We’re 100% focused on your goals, whether that’s clearing a black run or just not falling off the lift.
What’s the vibe with English lessons? Total clarity. Our instructors are fluent English speakers who make learning easy, safe, and fun.
Is it better value than Hakuba? Definitely. Between the cheaper cost of living in the village and our “6-person-per-lesson” group hack, your budget goes significantly further in Myoko.
Is it hard to book? Since we’re the top-rated school in the area, our peak dates (January and February) fill up fast. Don’t gatekeep send this to the group chat and secure your spot early.
